MASTERS DESIGN PROJECT
|
The project shown in this page was the primary studio project conducted during my MA in Architecture and Urbanism. The primary drivers behind the project were the rapidly increased rents and overdevelopment currently being conducted in Manchester Northern Quarter. This is in turn forcing out the creatives that helped make it the vibrant place it is today.
To obtain a brief for the project I contacted a non profit organisation who provides cheaper rent for artists. Within this brief it was stated that a range of residential, studio, gallery and cafe spaces should be provided along with lots of landscaping and performance spaces. The design of the residential units was based around a hexagonal grid that would allow for simple reproduction of 1 bed and 2 bed residential units. The design of the gallery spaces takes inspiration from the surrounding mills and chimney stacks to create open and light environments within. The surrounding landscaping was originally designed with an angular form, allowing for a clear direction towards the primary elements of the site. This however did not create a comfortable environment and was therefore changed to a more natural curved design. More information on this project can be found in the "Design Thesis" section. |
