ICE CLIMBING CENTRE
As an integral part of my final year design studio assignment at Sheffield Hallam University, we were tasked with designing an ice climbing centre. This would be based at the currently closed Sheffield Ski Village.
My design focused around a large cylindrical ice climbing arena, with internal ice bar. With the associated reception, changing, retail and bar spaces then rotated around the building. This design choice was based around the opportunities provided by the large open site. These opportunities allowed me to provide sweeping views, large amounts of solar gain, and a number of stepped terraces. The reason a cylindrical shape was chosen for the ice climbing arena was largely down to how inclusive the internal space would feel. The external envelope was chosen to reflect the interior spaces, with an abstract ice themed cladding. |
